Esteban's research interests focus on migration, identity and diasporas: how communities perform, produce and reproduce belonging, and the spaces they create and recreate. His areas of study cover South-South migration, mainly Latin America and the Middle East, and the links within and between them. Esteban is also interested in the importance of migrant and refugee voices, their representation in the media, and the divisions within diasporic communities. His current research looks into Venezuelan migration in the Americas, the Ethics of migration research, and the use of mixed methods and multimodality in interdisciplinary research on migration and refugees.
