Kauther's work addresses questions around racism and national identity in order to understand citizenship refusals and revocations. Her DPhil project explores how racial hierarchies are created in German Citizenship Law through the concept of discretionary decision making. She questions how legal frameworks are constructed and re-interpreted with demographical changes in society. The methodological approach of her work uses court judgments and court ethnography to investigate how national belonging is assessed in court judgments. She argues that institutional racism reflects colonial knowledge practices and thus continues to discriminated against ethnically minoritised groups.
