Lena's work explores asylum and religious conversion. Her current research project examines asylum processes based on conversion to Christianity and fear of religious persecution, as well as asylum processes based on 'de-conversion'. In these cases, decision-makers of secular states have to assess the genuineness of a religious conversion, and risks of practising or not practising a new religion in the country of origin of the applicants (mostly Iran and Afghanistan). Lena uses ethnographic fieldwork at courts in Germany, interviews, and case law analysis to explore the tensions between culture, religion, and power in these processes. Lena has spoken on BBC4 World at One and Radio 4 Sunday Programme on asylum and conversion and is keen to develop new partnerships or offer consultancy on topics related to refugees, religion and integration.
