Madeleine’s work focuses on labour migration and social transformation in sending communities, with particular reference to contemporary Russia and Central Asia. Drawing on ethnographic research in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Russia, she explores the social embededness of migration decisions, exploring how they are shaped by, and in turn transform, family dynamics and communal obligations. In Russia she has conducted research on migrants’ integration and documentary strategies, including the role of intermediaries in facilitating access to informal markets for housing and healthcare.
