Romu's work focusses on the decision to migrate, and the investment decisions made in anticipation, for example education, or language acquisition. His work also addresses the thorny question of how policy should respond to asylum seekers who do not obtain the legal right to stay but do not return voluntarily to their home country. Using unique data on subjective expectations, he evaluates the perceived returns on overstaying and the implications for European asylum policy.
