Simon works in political economy and social theory while drawing on history, sociology, philosophy and political theory. He moves between observation-based qualitative research (mostly semi-structured interviews and contextualized case studies), secondary data analysis, and conceptual inquiry. He is working on a series of books and papers designed to theorize, synthesize and explain higher education, especially its global dimension, including international connectedness and student .
Currently he is working on (a) a comparative study of national approaches to higher education and public good, (b) global science, (c) higher education in East Asia, especially China, and (d) theorisations of higher education and globalisation.
